Design of the future Ferrari team engine

5 months ago Andrea, a young mechanical design engineer, joined the team at HPE COXA (High Performance Engineering), a high-end mechanical engineering specialist. Having studied internal combustion engines, Andrea was the perfect person to support one of their most prestigious clients, Scuderia Ferrari, in the development of their future F1 Power Unit engine.

At the heart of the Italian Motor Valley

HPE COXA was founded in 1998 by Piero Ferrari, the last living son of Enzo Ferrari, to provide high-end engineering and precision manufacturing services to the motor sport, aerospace and defence industries. I am currently working at head office in Modena in Italy, at the heart of the Italian Motor Valley, where the major players in motorsport are based: Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Ducati, Pagani, etc.

The future Ferrari F1 Power Unit

HPE Coxa is working for the Scuderia Ferrari F1 team, the division responsible for the participation of Ferrari cars in races. We are helping them to design the components of their future internal combustion engine, which will be used in the F1 Grand Prix. I have to simultaneously design 3D models in CreoCAD, one of the most advanced software programs, and design the mechanical aspects. My tasks have changed over the course of the project. I had the chance to be in direct contact with the Ferrari engineers and project managers and to design the necessary components myself from scratch. For a Formula 1 fan, working on a project like this is a dream come true.

High standards and excellence

The main challenges I face are definitely time and stress management. Motorsport is a demanding environment where you have to deliver the best results within the shortest possible time. It’s really important to avoid mistakes and be very focused. The work environment is nevertheless fantastic. The team I am working with is made up of young people, but also experienced staff whose secrets I am trying to learn to improve my skills and knowledge.
